WHIPPETS IN OBEDIENCE

by Jill Baum (and friends)

I was born showing dogs — almost! My parents were bitten by the bug when I was 18 months old, and that was it. I was dragged to every dog show around since before I can remember. My first time showing was at a match, and I was four years old — my boxer was bigger than I was! Although I've shown dogs all my life, I am relatively new to obedience competition, but not to training. I started when I was ten, just basic obedience to make easy—to—live—with dogs. I've trained several different breeds, and taught a few classes. I've trained three whippets to date, titled two, and am starting my fourth, a puppy. My two current "trainees" have CDX's, and will hopefully earn their UD's in the future.

Whippets are not difficult dogs to train, BUT the trainer must keep a couple of very important things in mind:

  • Whippets are smart, and repetitious, military drilling will not win you any titles (or friends).
  • Whippets do like to please their person, so if you make training fun and happy, you will both enjoy learning.

In my experience, whippets will do anything — mine show, lure course, do obedience, swim, track, retrieve rocks (by scent), etc. It's fun! So start your puppies young — with a sock, a ball, a stick, a dumbbell. If they learn to "play chase" (also called retrieving), that's half the battle — that one little thing!

Whippets can do everything! Their only limit is their owner's expecta tions. A confident, outgoing puppy is the easiest to train, but patience will train, and add confidence, to any dog. However, smarter is not always better! The smart ones are a challenge; they continually think up new ways to avoid doing things they dislike. It's up to you to make it fun enough that they enjoy learning. I use food, a rabbit fur, play, and tons of praise. Once they know something, though, I will correct when necessary — sometimes they test you to see if you really want them to do this. Also, I never use a chain collar, always nylon. That way, a collar correction is a correction, not a punishment.

Gail Burnham's book Play Training Your Dog is the sighthound owner's obedience bible. She trains greyhounds, and knows whereof she speaks! I strongly recommend reading it to anyone interested in obedience, even if you've trained dogs before.

Ariami's Sheer Chaos, CDX, FCh.

Puppy kindergarten (put on by most obedience clubs), is wonderful. It's a great way to socialize and gently start training your babies. My youngest whippet is starting that way. They get distracted easily, so you must have patience, but to a puppy, everything is fun! And they learn so quickly!

Obedience training does not ruin a dog for the breed ring. My Sara showed in Specials at the Centennial, then turned around and earned the third leg for her CD and High Scoring Whippet the same day! I just use two different collars, and keep it light. I don't use liver for obedience training, I use hot dogs, or canned or carton cat treats (easy to carry and keep), and again emphasizing the difference.

Some wonderful Whippet examples — Jodie Martin and O.T.Ch. Sporting Fields Mad Hatter, and Ch. Sporting Fields Santana, CDX — who can forget those happy and great—working dogs. Patricia Younger and Ch. Rikki's Arrow, UD, FCh. are another super example — Arrow gained all his titles with scores well above 190, and placements, including several firsts! Napoleon McCallum and his Nap's Scarlet Pimpernel, CDX, earned their titles with a couple of firsts, and an all—breed High In Trial!

My accomplishments to date aren't quite so lofty, but I am very proud of my girls — Ch. Tudor's Quicksilver Serenade, CDX, FCh. and Ariami's Sheer Chaos, CDX, FCh. If they can do it, so can we all! It takes a desire to make the time (about 15 or 20 minutes a day), loads of patience (there will always be some set—backs), and a lot of encouragement and perserverance —for dog and handler alike!

See you at the National Specialty in April!

Happy training, from us to you!
