COVER STORY

Ch. Whippoorwill Bohem Aria

Ch. Hardknott Maestro of Bohem x Ch. Whippoorwill Precious Gem

We are pleased to honor the foundation bitch for the U.S. development of Bohem Whippets and shall always be grateful to Barbara Henderson for letting us have her. She was 2 months old during the Santa Barbara weekend in 1983 and although the whole litter was fantastic (seven finished!) we have never regretted the choice.

In the show ring, "Beebe" finished with three consecutive Breeds over top rated specials competition. There were offers for a full-scale specials career, but instead we opted to show her almost entirely during the big specialty weekends. She started by going BOS at the 1985 AWC specialty in California (Mrs. Gayle Bontecue) and was BOB at the record AWC Midwest supported entry (Mr. Robert Forsyth) the same year.

In 1987 she was BIS at the AWC Western specialty (Mr. Kent Delaney), and in 1990, already nearing veteran status, she was also BIS at the SCWA specialty (Mrs. Lee Canalizo). In 1991 she won an Award of Merit and Best Veteran at the same show (Mrs. Pat Miller). There have been several other nice Breed wins also.

Beebe has had three litters by three different dogs, resulting in the following:

• Ch. Bohem Whippoorwill Jenny Lind
(by Ch. Proud Fox of Whippoorwill), owner Carol Willumsen, AWC Nat'l Award of Merit.
• Ch. Bohem Callas of Whippoorwill
(by Proud Fox), owner Nenne Runsten, Multiple Specialty & BIS winner in Scandinava.
• Ch. Bohem Dance With Me (by Ch. Bohem American Way),
owner Sheila Worcester, finished with two Breeds from the classes.
• Ch. Bohem Whippoorwill Top Hat
(by American Way), owner Ilse Grove & Barbara Henderson, finished at 12 months.
• Ch. Bohem I Hear Singing
(by American Way), owner Lynne Schanzle, AWC Midwest weekend major.
• Bohem Moon at Night, CD, F.Ch., TT, SC
(by American Way), owners Tina & Lee Nachtrieb, pointed as a puppy, broken leg.
• Ch. Bohem Moonshine Lullaby
(by American Way), owner Elizabeth Smith, AWC specialty & All-Breeds BIS.
• Ch. Bohem Whippoorwill No Strings
(by American Way), owner Barbara Henderson, AWC specialty Best in Sweepstakes.
• Bohem I'm In Heaven, F.Ch., LCM, TT
(by American Way), owners Ken & Judy Marden, never shown but same quality.
• Ch. Bohem Magic Flute (by Ch. Sporting Fields Strider),
owner Lynne Schanzle, finished at 12 months with 4 majors & BOB over specials.
• Ch. Bohem La Bohéme
(by Strider), owner Bohem, see next page.

Beebe herself didn't get much chance to race (except for fun Sundays at Storke Field), but "live coursing" (mostly cats) remains her major addiction — equalled only by her love for food and sleeping under the covers... She will be 10 years old this spring and we hope to bring her out in public on one or two more occasions. She loves the limelight!

From the past...

Bohem was founded in Sweden 35 years ago. Our English imports carried much the same bloodlines as the top U.S. Whippets of that time. The first influential sire, Ch. Laguna Leader (sire of a then record 25 champions in the 1960s/70s), was himself by Ch. Laguna Ligonier out of a litter sister to Westminster group winner Ch. Laguna Lucky Lad — which made him closely related to several top U.S. sires as well as all the later Mardormere dogs. Another import, Ch. Badgewood Mark Twain, carried U.S. lines from Meander on his dam's side, and Ch. Fleeting Flamboyant was sired by Eng. & Am. Ch. Tantiwey Diver of Pennyworth.

With this background, and from very few litters, came a long line of champions such as Ch. Bohem Double Up, Ch. Bohem Lekain, Ch. Bohem Filipin, Ch. Bohem Mome Rath, Ch. Bohem Flamous, all top winners, and many others who in turn became top producers and were behind most of the top winners in Scandinavia during the 1970s.

In 1981, Ch. Bohem Mae West (by Flamboyant x a
Leader daughter) was brought to the U.S. in whelp to
Filipin and produced a small litter which included
Ch.Bohem American Way (BOS from the classes at
the 1983 AWC specialty in California under Mrs.
Newcombe). He was bred to Aria (see cover story) and
one of the five champions from that litter, Ch. Bohem I
Hear Singing,
was then bred back to her grandsire
Ch. Hardknott Maestro of Bohem, who was
imported from England ten years ago in co-ownership
with Whippoorwill (where he is still going strong at 11
years of age and has sired over 40 champions).
Our pick from this litter is Ch. Bohem Of Thee
I Sing, shown on the following page.

Only one litter was bred here during 1992:
thanks to John Richardson, Ch. Bohem Delacreme
Demoiselle
(Ch. Delacreme de la Renta x Aria's litter
sister Ch. Whippoorwill Sonatina) came back to produce
a beautiful litter by Ch. Chelsea Drakkar of Oxford. Two
puppies have gone to England and one to Finland, but
we hope that those which stayed in the U.S. will be
shown during 1993.

Also congratulations to Ch. Lauralbriar
Bohem Zardonyx
(co-owned with Jo Meister) and to
Ch. Snowy Creek Best Bet of Bohem (co - owned
with the Suttons & John Richardson) on finishing their
titles — bringing the total of Bohem champions right up
to 70 (including a few Greyhounds and a couple of early
Afghan Hounds).

to the present...

Ch. Bohem Of Thee I Sing

(Ch. Hardknott Maestro of Bohem x Ch. Bohem I Hear
Singing)

"Betsy" won both majors at her first two all-breed shows at 10 months of age in 1992, later took a third major and BOW at the AWC California specialty under Mr. Brian Doherty from Australia, and finished with a Breed
from the classes shortly afterwards. She will be specialled from time to time as she matures in
1993

Bohem La Bohême

(Ch. Sporting Fields Strider x Ch. Whippoorwill Bohem Aria)

"Angel" looks so much like her sire that it
seemed natural that she should go East to be
shown by Sporting Fields for a few months in 1992. She finished her title with back-to-back majors
during the Westchester weekend (shown at both shows by Divoney Rivera from Brazil) and is now back home in California. Thanks to everyone at Sporting Field for
obviously giving her such a good time!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT -

1992 was a year of transition for the American Whippet Club. Two new members were elected to the Board of Directors. A new President took office. Changes in the procedures for selecting judges for the Regional Specialties were formulated by the membership. A new National Show Chairman was appointed. A change in the National Point Race rules to allow spay / neuters to compete for the Award of Racing Merit title was accomplished. A breed rescue committee was established and a program put into effect. A new Southern Regional Show Chairman was appointed. Also, several projects neared completion, including the constitution and by-laws revision and application to become a member of ASFA.

The 1992 National Specialty and Futurity drew record entries. All the Regional Specialties were well attended with quality at an all time high.

No doubt 1993 will bring even more changes in how the AWC functions, reflecting the changing needs of the membership and the Board's willingness to communicate openly with the entire membership. Your active participation is essential to the continued success of the AWC, and I thank everyone for their encouragement, comments and constructive criticism.

BLUESKIES INITIAL REACTION

"D.J."

Pictured here taking a Puppy Group I at the AKC Sanctioned match in Wenachee, Washington at 6 months.

Honestly, when D.J. was born our initial reaction was not particularly favorable. A white whippet is not the easiest color to finish, but, once you see D.J.'s beautiful movement, great topline, dark eyes and gorgeous expression you realize that "color really is immaterial".

BLUESKIES ORDER OF MAGNITUDE

"MAGGIE"
Pictured here being awarded her first point under judge Knox
Buchannon at the delicate age of 6 months.

Maggie loves to show. She knows she's beautiful and
assumes that everyone else does too. From the beginning, Maggie has loved to bait and kiss up to the judges in the ring. We think that Maggie will bring her charm and good looks into the show ring much more in 1993.

BLUESKIES TRICK OF

THE TAIL "TRIXIE"

Pictured here being awarded her first point under judge Eugene Shabatura at the age of 7 months.

As much as her sisters, D.J. and Maggie, love to show, Trixie would rather be under the covers in bed at home. However, Trixie has been a good sport and tried to be a good girl in the ring. This win was from the Bred-byExhibitor class. It's ironic when the puppy everyone says is definitely pick of the litter would rather be asleep in bed.

Suki was finished entirely by Kim, with several BOB's from the classes. Her finishing major (and BOB over Group winning Specials) was under Breeder-Judge Mrs. Doris Wear. At the National, Breeder-Judge Mary Beth Arthur chose Kim as Best Junior Handler. We are very proud of this team! A spring 1993 litter is planned.

(Hound Hill First Light x Ch. Whippletrees Stoney Meadows Whimsey)

Emily is major pointed under Sighthound Specialist Lt.Col. Wallace Pede. With her gorgeous outline and sound movement, she has acquired nine points in limited showing. She is pictured above going BOW under Ms. Roxanne Mahan. She is also shown in Juniors, but she'd much rather be chasing a frisbee!

(Ch. Karasar's Head of the Klass x Ch. Heatherlane Belle Starr)

Thank you Kerri Kuper for allowing us to acquire Victor! Always in the ribbons at the National Futurity, Eastern and Midwest Specialties, he continued his winning ways by taking a major and BOS over Specials from the puppy class under Sighthound Specialist Dr. William Houpt. In limited showing, Victor earned 5 points from the puppy classes, handled by fifteen-year-old Kim!

Mrs. Mary Beth Arthur, Judge

"Shemya" is a multiple Group placer, and a Best Junior Handler in Show companion. This classy lady has 5 Canadian points and needs only one more SKC certificate of merit. We thank Jeanne and Si Simonsen for all their patience and support! Also Ms. Pat Hastings, judge.

Nanny began her career at just 7 months with a Group 3 and 4, over specials. She next won the 7-9 month Futurity class at the 1989 AWC National Specialty under Barbara Henderson. Nanny finished easily by 10 months and has continued to be a multiple Group-placing bitch, with limited showing by her owner/handler.

Watch for her Tivio puppies who are already winning points from the puppy class.
