The American Whippet Club Honors the Memory
of Three Influential People Lost This Year

billings

Dr. Charles E. Billings (1929-2010) – Charlie and wife Lillian built up their small Flyalong Whippet kennel, based mostly on English blood, either through direct imports or through Pennyworth breeding. Unquestionably his most important influence on U.S. Whippet history came through Charlie's work for AKC and the American Whippet Club during the controversial period in the 1980s when a
breeder insisted that he had produced purebred Whippets by discovering what he called the "long hidden long-haired gene" in Whippets. Charlie was then a Board member of AWC and headed the committee that investigated the problem. It was mainly through his diplomacy, firmness and insistence on sticking to the proven facts that it was eventually — after it turned out that the little longhaired dogs were the result of crosses with Borzoi and possibly also Shetland Sheepdogs — possible for AKC to expel a whole series of dogs previously registered as Whippets from the AKC Stud Book. We in the American Whippet Club can be proud to have counted Dr. Charles Billings as one of our own.

frank

Mary Jane Frank was a very unique person who had many hobbies and passions, one of which was Whippets. From the 1960's to 1984 she bred approximately 10 litters under the kennel name of Frankly. She had an amazing memory with great stories from years past involving her beloved Whippets and Whippet friends. When she passed away she was living in Oregon and achieved one of her life long dreams which was bringing a Stargazer Lily into

tom

Dr. Tom Sooy – Tom died of complications following a bone marrow stem cell transplant October 9,2010 at the age of 58. Tom touched the lives of those around him with his warmth and care.
His passing is a great loss to his family, veterinary profession, the whippet community and especially Whippet rescue. Tom owned and operated a Veterinary surgical referral practice in Catonsville
Maryland for 22 years.Tom was very involved with whippet rescue and generously donated his time and expertise to any rescue that needed his help.Tom saved the lives or gave a better quality of life
to not only the rescues but to many other beloved pets. Rescue has lost a truly dedicated and skilled friend. Affectionately known as Dr. Tom he could always be found sitting ringside at the AWC National and the Eastern Specialty. He was frequently called upon to render assistance to a whippet or give advice to the owner and did so graciously. He always enjoyed all the AWC functions. Tom was a very special person, someone we will all miss. His legacy lives on in those who loved, admired and learned from him. Tom leaves behind his wife,Diane, son Collier and his beloved Whippet fifteen and half year old Zipper.
